Melbourne’s rail network is closed after a knife attack that injured a woman.
The woman was found in the parking lot of the train station in Southbank on Thursday.
She was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died.
A spokesperson for the Victorian Police Service said a man had been arrested in connection with the incident and would appear in court in Melbourne on Saturday.
A knife was recovered from the scene.
It’s understood the woman was walking down the street with her two daughters when she was attacked.
Police said it was not known if the attacker was known to the woman.
“We do not know if the woman is related to the suspect,” a spokesperson for Victoria Police said.
“The investigation is ongoing and we do not have a suspect description at this stage.”
A spokesman for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau said it is providing extra police resources to the Melbourne rail network.
“These additional police resources will be deployed to the network as soon as the situation becomes more serious,” he said.
